Happy New Year!!!

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,
redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not
be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Malham tarn

Well, I hope you've all had a lovely Christmas time! I have! :).
Today, Dad, Mum and I went for a ride out to see Malham tarn. We chose a very windy day to go which was rather silly but we all seemed to enjoy it! We had a few brief respites from the wind, which we were very glad of! I was also very glad the gloves I got for Christmas kept my hands very warm. I took a couple of pictures but they don't capture how windy it was. 1, unsurprisingly to those who know me! is of some limestone rock (which we saw a lot of including on the journey which was a fun ride out!) and the other of the tarn. I've still not properly warmed up!

"As with gladness men of old"

Well, a small group went carol singing on Thursday and Saturday, and it seemed to go very well. The only slight snag was that on Thursday it rained very heavily so our carol sheets got absolutely soaked (as did we)! and we didn't know how "As with gladness men of old" went. Yesterday evening, I went somewhere else and they sang it to the alternative tune "Dix" which I knew from another song, and I really like this carol and am quite surprised that I didn't know it before. I think the words are really good too!

What do you think??

Into the dark?

………”I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness. . . “ John 8:12

Into the dark, Lord Jesus,

Into the dark with Thee.

There hath come to my heart a calling apart,

And a whispered, “Follow Me.”

Take Thou my hand, Lord Jesus,

In Thy mighty clasp divine;

Hold it so close, Lord Jesus,

That it tremble not in Thine;

For my heart shrinks back from the unknown track,

And my feet tread falteringly;

And into the dark I follow –

Into the dark with Thee.

Into the dark, Lord Jesus,

Is it the dark with Thee?

Nay, Thou makest the night about me light,

And mine eyes—mine eyes shall see-

Shall “see the King in His beauty.”

In the land that is far away;

Shall see in the heavenly sunshine,

The path that is hid today.

Then why should I fear what the untried year

May bring to mine or me?

Into the dark I follow –

Nay, into the Light with Thee!

- Edith G. Cherry

Deep sorrows sometimes prove to be God’s masked mercies. The worst sorrows in life are not its losses, and misfortunes, but its fears.

Why will sinners go to hell?

I saw this and thought it was definitely worth sharing!!

Why will sinners go to hell?

Much damage has been done to the cause of the gospel by telling the world that they will go to hell “because they don’t believe in Jesus.” This makes no sense to the ungodly. It seems unreasonable that God would eternally damn them for not believing something. However, the verse can be explained this way: If a man jumps out of a plane without a parachute, he will perish because he transgressed the law of gravity. Had he put on a parachute, he would have been saved. In one sense, he perished because he didn’t put on the parachute. But the primary reason he died was because he broke the law of gravity.

If a sinner refuses to trust in Jesus Christ before he passes through the door of death, he will perish. This isn’t because he refused to trust the Savior, but because he transgressed the Law of God. Had he “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom. 13:14), he would have been saved; but because he refused to repent, he will suffer the full consequences of his sin. Sin is not “failing to believe in Jesus.” Sin is “transgression of the Law” (1 John 3:4, KJV).

The Gospel and the Vileness of sin.

I found this on the Sacred Sandwich site, and thought it was a good reminder!:

Here is..." a stark reminder of the vileness of sin in the life of every man. Too often, especially among unbelievers, we become complacent with our sinfulness because we see no evidence of negative repercussions. Because of God’s great patience and benevolence, our lives seem unaffected by our rebellious actions. In fact, in some cases, life seems even better than before. Prosperity abounds and our consciences are easily seared to the point of seeing no harm in our “inconsequential” sin.

Let us not forget, therefore, the reality of the vileness of all sin, even those so-called “lesser” sins of omission, those failures of duty and those shortcomings in spirit that even beset the believer. As the Scriptures tell us, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”—1 John 1:8-10.

In conclusion, I leave you with these eloquent words from Charles Spurgeon in response to the above text:

“The Lord will not consent to parley with you on the ground that you are not much of a sinner, and that after all your sin is not a great evil. No, he will meet you where the truth is and nowhere else; when you confess that you are unworthy of his pity, you are owning the truth, and when you feel guilty, you feel what is really fact; on this footing of truth, sad truth though it be, the Lord will meet with you through the atoning blood. It is in your vileness that sovereign grace o’er sin abounding will come to you and cleanse you, and therefore the sooner you come to the honest truth the better for you, for the sooner will you obtain joy and peace through believing in Christ. The text means just this—Treat God truthfully, and he will treat you truthfully. Make no pretensions before God, but lay bare your soul, let him see it as it is, and then he will be faithful and just to forgive you your sins and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. Mark the beauty of that expression; God will deal with you in faithfulness. His nature is mercy, and you naturally expect that if you confess your sin to a merciful God, he will deal mercifully with you and be faithful to his nature; and he will be so. But he has also given a promise that if the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts and turn unto the Lord, he will have mercy upon him; depend upon it he will be faithful to his promise. The blood of Jesus Christ has made a full atonement, and God will be faithful to that atonement. He will deal with you on the grounds of the covenant of grace, of which the sacrifice of Jesus is the seal, and therein also he will be true to you…

“For my own part, I mean to come to him always as a sinner. I know I am saved, but I never hope to get one inch beyond that verse,— ‘The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth me from all sin,’ for only so can I walk in the light as he is in the light.”

Amen."

Men and women who hear the Gospel regularly, I often fear much for you. I fear lest you become so familiar with the sounds of its doctrines, that insensibly you become dead to its power. I fear lest your religion should sink down into a little vague talk about your own weakness and corruption, and a few sentimental expressions about Christ, while real practical fighting on Christ’s side is altogether neglected. Oh, beware of this state of mind! Be doers of the Word, and not hearers only. No victory—no crown! Fight and overcome!

Thou Oh Lord

Well, as part of the Olive Tree Ministries UK team, I was at the Lakes Gospel Choir concert last night and it was a really good evening. They sang some lovely songs, with some lovely voices, all praising our lovely Lord! (I keep remembering(at the moment!) that chorus: "He's the altogether lovely to my soul!"(probably because we sang it at Barn Camp!))

This is one of my favourites: by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. They sang this one last night too. :)

In Acceptance Lieth Peace.

In acceptance lieth peace,
O my heart be still;
Let thy restless worries cease
And accept His will.
Though this test be not thy choice,
It is His—therefore rejoice.

In His plan there cannot be
Aught to make thee sad:
If this is His choice for thee,
Take it and be glad.
Make from it some lovely thing
To the glory of thy King.

Cease from sighs and murmuring,
Sing His loving grace,
This thing means thy furthering
To a wealthy place.
From thy fears He’ll give release,
In acceptance lieth peace.

You'll never guess... some more quotes!!!

Take comfort in Christ. Are there any among you who have tasted of this blessed change—who have put off the old man which is corrupt, and put on the new man which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness—who mourn over your own daily shortcomings, and sigh after more holiness, more self-denial, more mortification of the flesh with all its lusts? We bid you take comfort, and remember that Christ is still the same: He called you and gave you the witness of the Spirit, and He will not forsake you. You may waver and tremble: go forward in faith, and He will still support you. ~ J.C. Ryle

Yesterday's evening by evening by Spurgeon and Rejoice Again!

It ties in very nicely with some of the themes at Barn Camp so I thought I'd share it with you.

Conscious of their own natural defencelessness, the conies resort to burrows in the rocks, and are secure from their enemies. My heart, be willing to gather a lesson from these feeble folk. Thou art as weak and as exposed to peril as the timid cony, be as wise to seek a shelter. My best security is within the munitions of an immutable Jehovah, where his unalterable promises stand like giant walls of rock. It will be well with thee, my heart, if thou canst always hide thyself in the bulwarks of his glorious attributes, all of which are guarantees of safety for those who put their trust in him. Blessed be the name of the Lord, I have so done, and have found myself like David in Adullam, safe from the cruelty of my enemy; I have not now to find out the blessedness of the man who puts his trust in the Lord, for long ago, when Satan and my sins pursued me, I fled to the cleft of the rock Christ Jesus, and in his riven side I found a delightful resting-place. My heart, run to him anew to-night, whatever thy present grief may be; Jesus feels for thee; Jesus consoles thee; Jesus will help thee. No monarch in his impregnable fortress is more secure than the cony in his rocky burrow. The master of ten thousand chariots is not one whit better protected than the little dweller in the mountain’s cleft. In Jesus the weak are strong, and the defenceless safe; they could not be more strong if they were giants, or more safe if they were in heaven. Faith gives to men on earth the protection of the God of heaven. More they cannot need, and need not wish. The conies cannot build a castle, but they avail themselves of what is there already: I cannot make myself a refuge, but Jesus has provided it, his Father has given it, his Spirit has revealed it, and lo, again to-night I enter it, and am safe from every foe. Spurgeon

"This also comes from the LORD of hosts,
Who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance. " Isaiah 28:29

And here's today's J.C. Ryle quote which also ties in very much with Barn Camp!

Your trials may be many and great. Your cross may be very heavy. But the business of your soul is all conducted according to an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and sure. All things are working together for your good. Your sorrows are only purifying your soul for glory; your bereavements are only fashioning you as a polished stone for the temple above, made without hands. From whatever quarter the storms blow, they only drive you nearer to heaven! Whatever weather you may go through it is only ripening you for the garner of God. Your best things are quite safe. ~ J.C. Ryle

Rejoice!

Well, I was reminded at Barn Camp that we can and should rejoice all the time and there are so many reasons to rejoice about! Look at Psalm 103 for some of them! God is so good. God never promised us an easy road (I know we wish He had sometimes, but He didn't!) but, what He did promise is so much better: He will be with us every step of the way, strengthening us when we're too weak. This verse, found in Isaiah 41:10, says, "Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." If that isn't something to rejoice about, please tell me something that is!

Today's excerpt from Mrs Charles Cowman's "Traveling Toward Sunrise" devotional.

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." Isaiah 26:3

I look not back--God knows the fruitless effort,
The wasted hours, the sinning and regrets;
I leave them all with Him that blots the record
And graciously forgives and then forgets.

I look not forward, God sees all the future,
The road that short or long, will lead me home;
And He will face with me its every trial,
And bear for me the burden that may come.

I look not around me-- then would fears assail me,
So wild the tumult of life's restless sea;
So dark the world, so filled with war and evil,
So vain the hope of comfort and of ease.

I look not inward, that would make me wretched,
For I have naught on which to stay my trust;
Nothing I see but failures and shortcomings,
And weak endeavours crumbling into dust.

But I look up-- up into the face of Jesus!
For there my heart can rest, my fears are stilled;
And there is joy, and love and light for darkness,
And perfect peace, and every hope fulfilled.

Barn Camp and quote

So, I'm really looking forward to Barn Camp, it's only a week away!:)
It's always really encouraging and challenging and I'm definitely ready for a time of refreshing!!

and, here's another great quote:

"Wherever we turn in the church of God, there is Jesus. He is the beginning, middle and end of everything to us. There is nothing good, nothing holy, nothing beautiful, nothing joyous which He is not to a His servants. No one need be poor, because, if he chooses, he can have Jesus for his own property and possession. No one need be downcast, for Jesus is the joy of heaven, and it is His joy to en
ter into sorrowful hearts. We can exaggerate about many things; but we can never exaggerate our obligation to Jesus, or the compassionate abundance of the love of Jesus to us. All our lives long we might talk of Jesus, and yet we should never come to an end of the sweet things that might be said of Him. Eternity will not be long enough to learn all He is, or to praise Him for all He has done, but then, that matters not; for we shall be always with Him, and we desire nothing more."

Catch up time on quotes and a lovely video.

“Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine.” - John_21:12

In these words the believer is invited to a holy nearness to Jesus. “Come and dine,” implies the same table, the same meat; aye, and sometimes it means to sit side by side, and lean our head upon the Saviour’s bosom. It is being brought into the banqueting-house, where waves the banner of redeeming love. “Come and dine,” gives us a vision of union with Jesus, because the only food that we can feast upon when we dine with Jesus is himself. Oh, what union is this! It is a depth which reason cannot fathom, that we thus feed upon Jesus. “He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.” It is also an invitation to enjoy fellowship with the saints. Christians may differ on a variety of points, but they have all one spiritual appetite; and if we cannot all feel alike, we can all feed alike on the bread of life sent down from heaven. At the table of fellowship with Jesus we are one bread and one cup. As the loving cup goes round we pledge one another heartily therein. Get nearer to Jesus, and you will find yourself linked more and more in spirit to all who are like yourself, supported by the same heavenly manna. If we were more near to Jesus we should be more near to one another. We likewise see in these words the source of strength for every Christian. To look at Christ is to live, but for strength to serve him you must “come and dine.” We labour under much unnecessary weakness on account of neglecting this percept of the Master. We none of us need to put ourselves on low diet; on the contrary, we should fatten on the marrow and fatness of the gospel that we may accumulate strength therein, and urge every power to its full tension in the Master’s service. Thus, then, if you would realize nearness to Jesus, union with Jesus, love to his people and strength from Jesus, “come and dine” with him by faith.

“With thee is the fountain of life.” - Psalm_36:9

There are times in our spiritual experience when human counsel or sympathy, or religious ordinances, fail to comfort or help us. Why does our gracious God permit this? Perhaps it is because we have been living too much without him, and he therefore takes away everything upon which we have been in the habit of depending, that he may drive us to himself. It is a blessed thing to live at the fountain head. While our skin- bottles are full, we are content, like Hagar and Ishmael, to go into the wilderness; but when those are dry, nothing will serve us but “Thou God seest me.” We are like the prodigal, we love the swine-troughs and forget our Father’s house. Remember, we can make swine-troughs and husks even out of the forms of religion; they are blessed things, but we may put them in God’s place, and then they are of no value. Anything becomes an idol when it keeps us away from God: even the brazen serpent is to be despised as “Nehushtan,” if we worship it instead of God. The prodigal was never safer than when he was driven to his father’s bosom, because he could find sustenance nowhere else. Our Lord favours us with a famine in the land that it may make us seek after himself the more. The best position for a Christian is living wholly and directly on God’s grace-still abiding where he stood at first-”Having nothing, and yet possessing all things.” Let us never for a moment think that our standing is in our sanctification, our mortification, our graces, or our feelings, but know that because Christ offered a full atonement, therefore we are saved; for we are complete in him. Having nothing of our own to trust to, but resting upon the merits of Jesus-his passion and holy life furnish us with the only sure ground of confidence. Beloved, when we are brought to a thirsting condition, we are sure to turn to the fountain of life with eagerness. Spurgeon

To me the Bible is not God, but it is God’s voice, and I do not hear it without awe. Spurgeon

Let us see now one more proof of the unspeakable importance of the death of Christ. Let us treasure up His gracious sayings. Let us strive to walk in the steps of His holy life. Let us prize His intercession. Let us long for His second coming. But never let us forget that the crowning fact in all we know of Jesus Christ, is His death upon the cross. From that death flow all our hopes. Without that death we would have nothing solid beneath our feet. May we prize that death more and more every year we live; and in all our thoughts about Christ, rejoice in nothing so much as the great fact that He died for us! ~ J.C. Ryle

Every sin of the elect was laid upon the great Champion of our salvation, and by the atonement carried away. Spurgeon

A few quotes and a funny picture!

The Lord is infinitely good, essentially. He is growingly good, experimentally. Spurgeon

"The only Christian you want to listen to is the one who gives you more of a hunger for God." AW Tozer

Our Lord’s great object in laying down his life upon the cross was the father’s glory. Spurgeon

"No man has found how far he can go with God because there is in the mysterious depths of God neither limit nor end." AW Tozer

If God be glorified, does it really matter where we are? What becomes of us is of small consequence compared with bringing glory to his name. Spurgeon

"You may be careless about your soul, but the devil is not." ~ J.C. Ryle

If you meet with a system of theology which magnifies man, flee from it as far as you can. Spurgeon

“But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck.” - Exodus_34:20

Every firstborn creature must be the Lord’s, but since the ass was unclean, it could not be presented in sacrifice. What then? Should it be allowed to go free from the universal law? By no means. God admits of no exceptions. The ass is his due, but he will not accept it; he will not abate the claim, but yet he cannot be pleased with the victim. No way of escape remained but redemption-the creature must be saved by the substitution of a lamb in its place; or if not redeemed, it must die. My soul, here is a lesson for thee. That unclean animal is thyself; thou art justly the property of the Lord who made thee and preserves thee, but thou art so sinful that God will not, cannot, accept thee; and it has come to this, the Lamb of God must stand in thy stead, or thou must die eternally. Let all the world know of thy gratitude to that spotless Lamb who has already bled for thee, and so redeemed thee from the fatal curse of the law. Must it not sometimes have been a question with the Israelite which should die, the ass or the lamb? Would not the good man pause to estimate and compare? Assuredly there was no comparison between the value of the soul of man and the life of the Lord Jesus, and yet the Lamb dies, and man the ass is spared. My soul, admire the boundless love of God to thee and others of the human race. Worms are bought with the blood of the Son of the Highest! Dust and ashes redeemed with a price far above silver and gold! What a doom had been mine had not plenteous redemption been found! The breaking of the neck of the ass was but a momentary penalty, but who shall measure the wrath to come to which no limit can be imagined? Inestimably dear is the glorious Lamb who has redeemed us from such a doom. Spurgeon’s Evening by Evening

"Reality" a poem by Frances Ridley Havergal

(Excerpt from "Traveling Toward Sunrise" by Mrs Charles E Cowman
In 1875 a young Christian, whose testimony to his faith in Christ had been met by the rejoinder that it was only phantom and sham, prayed in a meeting definitely asking the Lord that Frances Ridley Havergal might write a poem "to show what Thou art- a living bright Reality"; and waxing bold, he added, "and let her do it this very night."
On that evening Miss Havergal was at another meeting where a man in his prayer used the expression, "FATHER, WE KNOW THE REALITY OF JESUS CHRIST.' The expression made such a deep impression upon her that she went home and wrote a poem of nine stanzas, and dated it. When she recounted the incident, she added, "Does not this show the reality of prayer?")

REALITY, reality,
Lord Jesus Christ, Thou art to me!
From the spectral mists and driving clouds,
From the shifting shadows and phantom crowds; From unreal words and unreal lives,
Where truth with falsehood feebly strives;
From the passings away, the chance and change,
Flickerings, vanishings, swift and strange,
I turn to my glorious rest on Thee,
Who art the grand Reality.

Reality in greatest need,
Lord Jesus Christ, Thou art indeed!
Is the pilot real, who alone can guide
The drifting ship through the midnight tide?
Is the lifeboat real, as it nears the wreck,
And the saved ones leap from the parting deck?
Is the haven real, where the barque may flee
From the autumn gales of the wild North Sea?
Reality indeed art Thou,
My Pilot, Lifeboat, Haven now!

Reality, reality,
In brightest days art Thou to me!
Thou art the sunshine of my mirth,
Thou art the heaven above my earth,
The spring of the love of all my heart,
And the Fountain of my song Thou art;
For dearer than the dearest now,
And better than the best, art Thou,
Beloved Lord, in whom I see
Joy-giving, glad Reality.

Reality, reality,
Lord Jesus, Thou hast been to me!
When I thought the dream of life was past
And 'the Master's home-call' come at last;
When I thought I only had to wait
A little while at the Golden Gate,
Only another day or two,
Till Thou Thyself shouldst bear me through,
How real Thy presence was to me
How precious Thy Reality!

Reality, reality,
Lord Jesus Christ, Thou art to me!
Thy name is sweeter than songs of old,
Thy words are better than 'most fine gold,'
Thy deeds are greater than hero-glory,
Thy life is grander than poet-story;
But Thou, Thyself, for aye the same,
Art more than words and life and name!
Thyself Thou hast revealed to me,
In glorious Reality.

Reality, reality,
Lord Jesus Christ, is crowned in Thee.
In Thee is every type fulfilled,
In Thee is every yearning stilled
For perfect beauty, truth, and love;
for Thou art always far above
The grandest glimpse of our Ideal,
Yet more and more we know Thee real,
And marvel more and more to see
Thine infinite Reality.

Reality, reality
Of grace and glory dwells in Thee.
How real Thy mercy and Thy might!
How real Thy love, how real Thy light!
How real Thy truth and faithfulness!
How real Thy blessing when Thou dost bless!
How real Thy coming to dwell within!
How real the triumphs Thou dost win!
Does not the loving and glowing heart
Leap up to own how real Thou art?

Reality, reality!
Such let our adoration be!
Father, we bless Thee with heart and voice,
For the wondrous grace of Thy sovereign choice.
That patiently, gently, sought us out
In the far-off land of death and doubt,
That drew us to Christ by the Spirit's might,
That opened our eyes to see the light
That arose in strange reality,
From the darkness falling on Calvary.

Reality, reality,
Lord Jesus Christ, Thou art to me!
My glorious King, my Lord, my God,
Life is too short for half the laud,
For half the debt of praise I owe
For this blest knowledge, that 'I know
The reality of Jesus Christ,'--
Unmeasured blessing, gift unpriced!
Will I not praise Thee when I see
In the long noon of Eternity,
Unveiled, Thy 'bright Reality!'

Time for some more quotes. Enjoy!

As the profane take the liberty to force their irreligion upon you, so you take the liberty to force your religion upon them. Spurgeon

Let us remember this as we look forward to the days yet to come: We know not what our days may be – bright or dark, many or few – but we know that we are in the hands of Him who does all things well. He will not err in any of His dealings with us. He will take away and give – He will move and He will settle – with perfect wisdom, at the right time, in the right way. The great Shepherd of the sheep makes no mistakes. He leads every lamb of His flock by the right way to the city of habitation. ~ J.C. Ryle

Death is no punishment to the believer: it is the gate of endless joy. Spurgeon

"If you profess to be a child of God, leave it to the Lord Jesus to sanctify you in His own way." ~ J.C. Ryle

One of these days you will want a microscope to find a grain of evangelical doctrine in a dozen sermons. Spurgeon

"The glory of God always comes at the sacrifice of self." AW Tozer

Scripture reading is our spiritual meal-time. Spurgeon

"The blood of Christ can cleanse away all sin. But we must 'plead guilty' before God can declare us innocent." ~ J.C. Ryle

The Bible in the memory is better than the Bible in the book case. Spurgeon

Quotes for thought!

Dry doctrine, without the damping of the Spirit of God, may only make fuel for your eternal destruction. Spurgeon

"Once I put everything on the altar and LEAVE IT THERE, the brightness of God's smiling face will be seen." AW Tozer

A wise man does at first what a fool does at last. Spurgeon

Let us remember it as we look back over the days past of our lives, from the hour of our conversion. “Our Lord has done all things well.” In the first bringing us out of darkness into marvelous light–in humbling us and teaching us our weakness, guilt, and folly–in stripping us of our idols, and choosing all our portions in placing us where we are, and giving us what we have–how well everything has been done! How great the mercy that we have had on our own way! ~ J.C. Ryle

Whether we teach young Christians truth or not, the devil will be sure to teach them error. Spurgeon

NOTHING IN COMPETITION WITH THE LORD
See to it therefore that there be nothing that stands in any competition with
God in your esteem. Value Him more than all riches. Value His honour and glory more
than all the world. Be ready at all times to part with all things else and cleave
to God. Let God be your peculiar friend. Value His friendship more than the respect and
love of all the world. When you lose other enjoyments, when you lose earthly friends,
let this be a supporting, satisfying comfort to you, that you have God left. You
haven't lost God.
--Jonathan Edwards, "Christians a Chosen Generation,"

Though no man is free from the commission of sin, yet every converted man is free from the love of sin. Spurgeon

This is man. How can you guess why he is here? But when you find that man is "the child of a King" and that the earth is his royal inheritance, then you know that his first duty (and it ought to be his greatest pleasure) is to find out what God's will is concerning him, and to do it. He finds that God has revealed His will to him ; he finds that God says to him, "All this world is yours; even my sovereign will, will you restrain your will; do with these things just as you like--but remember that for every ounce of your strength, for every atom of your influence, and for every moment of your life, I will hold you responsible. All I ask of you is that you obey the laws that I, in my infinite wisdom, have made for your happiness--laws wiser than man can make for himself, laws that link his happiness to his virtue and his prosperity to his righteousness--laws that make it possible for him to rise up to and live upon that exalted plane to which I call my children." William Jennings Bryan (Scopes trial)

If God has set his choice upon us, let us aim to be choice men. Spurgeon

Definitely lots to think about there, and a few challenges!!
Enjoy!

Back to Capernwray

Well, yesterday was the beginning of Night School 2011-2012 at Capernwray Hall. My brother and I went (as we have done for several years!!). It was really good and encouraging. Both sessions were taken by Mark Thomas and the subject was the book of Hebrews (following on from last year when we reached chapter 10.) There were some very interesting points!!

Today, I've been reminded of every person's need to look to Jesus. He fulfills our every need and He is the only one who can truly satisfy! He calls us to come to Him and He delights when we acknowledge our dependence on Him.

"looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:2)

and here's another verse that keeps cropping up recently:
"The eternal God is our refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms." (Deuteronomy 33:27)

Yes, its that time again. More quotes:)

This life is made up of shadows: substance lies elsewhere. Spurgeon

Wilt thou ever say again that thy God hath forsaken thee when he has graven thee upon His own palms? Spurgeon

The true mark of the saint is that he can waive his own rights and obey the Lord Jesus. Oswald Chambers

Not that our salvation should be the effect of our work, but our work should be the evidence of our salvation. Spurgeon

"In the greatest difficulties, in the heaviest trials, in the deepest poverty and necessities, He has never failed me." – George Muller

He is not the God of apostates, for he hath said, “If any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.” Spurgeon

"The more my trust rests in God, the less I trust myself." AW Tozer (The Crucified Life)

This would be the first step in apostasy; men first forget the true, and then adore the false. Spurgeon

You could not be saved through any effort of your own, but now that you are saved it is necessary for you to put forward every effort you can to glorify Him. --H.A. Ironside

If you are God’s chosen ones, you will know it by your trusting in Jesus. Simple as that trust is, it is the infallible proof of election. Spurgeon

Jesus’ primary consideration is my absolute annihilation of my right to myself & my identification with Him. Oswald Chambers

Whatever may be said about election, it is written in the Word of God as with an iron pen; there is no getting rid of it, there it stands. Spurgeon

"HATE SIN! Instead of loving it, cleaving to it, excusing it, playing with it, we ought to hate it with a deadly hatred." ~ J.C. Ryle

There will be no doubt about His having chosen you, when you have chosen Him. Spurgeon

Spurgeon's devotional 29th September

“I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go.”
- Song of Solomon_3:4
Does Christ receive us when we come to him, notwithstanding all our past sinfulness? Does he never chide us for having tried all other refuges first? And is there none on earth like him? Is he the best of all the good, the fairest of all the fair? Oh, then let us praise him! Daughters of Jerusalem, extol him with timbrel and harp! Down with your idols, up with the Lord Jesus. Now let the standards of pomp and pride be trampled under foot, but let the cross of Jesus, which the world frowns and scoffs at, be lifted on high. O for a throne of ivory for our King Solomon! Let him be set on high for ever, and let my soul sit at his footstool, and kiss his feet, and wash them with my tears. Oh, how precious is Christ! How can it be that I have thought so little of him? How is it I can go abroad for joy or comfort when he is so full, so rich, so satisfying. Fellow believer, make a covenant with thine heart that thou wilt never depart from him, and ask thy Lord to ratify it. Bid him set thee as a signet upon his finger, and as a bracelet upon his arm. Ask him to bind thee about him, as the bride decketh herself with ornaments, and as the bridegroom putteth on his jewels. I would live in Christ’s heart; in the clefts of that rock my soul would eternally abide. The sparrow hath made a house, and the swallow a nest for herself where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God; and so too would I make my nest, my home, in thee, and never from thee may the soul of thy turtle dove go forth again, but may I nestle close to thee, O Jesus, my true and only rest.
“When my precious Lord I find,
All my ardent passions glow;
Him with cords of love I bind,
Hold and will not let him go.”

Yesterday's Evening devotional by Charles Spurgeon

"Evening
“My Beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.”
- Song of Solomon 5:4
Knocking was not enough, for my heart was too full of sleep, too cold and ungrateful to arise and open the door, but the touch of his effectual grace has made my soul bestir itself. Oh, the longsuffering of my Beloved, to tarry when he found himself shut out, and me asleep upon the bed of sloth! Oh, the greatness of his patience, to knock and knock again, and to add his voice to his knockings, beseeching me to open to him! How could I have refused him! Base heart, blush and be confounded! But what greatest kindness of all is this, that he becomes his own porter and unbars the door himself. Thrice blessed is the hand which condescends to lift the latch and turn the key. Now I see that nothing but my Lord’s own power can save such a naughty mass of wickedness as I am; ordinances fail, even the gospel has no effect upon me, till his hand is stretched out. Now, also, I perceive that his hand is good where all else is unsuccessful, he can open when nothing else will. Blessed be his name, I feel his gracious presence even now. Well may my bowels move for him, when I think of all that he has suffered for me, and of my ungenerous return. I have allowed my affections to wander. I have set up rivals. I have grieved him. Sweetest and dearest of all beloveds, I have treated thee as an unfaithful wife treats her husband. Oh, my cruel sins, my cruel self. What can I do? Tears are a poor show of my repentance, my whole heart boils with indignation at myself. Wretch that I am, to treat my Lord, my All in All, my exceeding great joy, as though he were a stranger. Jesus, thou forgivest freely, but this is not enough, prevent my unfaithfulness in the future. Kiss away these tears, and then purge my heart and bind it with sevenfold cords to thyself, never to wander more."

Saturday, 24 September 2011

Yes, you guessed it, time for a few more quotes!

What a beggarly thing it is for a man only to do his work well when he is watched. Such oversight is for boys at school and mere hirelings. Spurgeon

Men and women who hear the Gospel regularly, I often fear much for you. I fear lest you become so familiar with the sounds of its doctrines, that you gradually become dead to its power. I fear lest your religion should sink down into a little vague talk about your own weakness and corruption, and a few sentimental expressions about Christ, while real practical fighting on Christ’s side is altogether neglected. Oh, beware of this state of mind! “Be doers of the Word, and not hearers only.” No victory—no crown! Fight and overcome! ~ J.C. Ryle

Blessed is he who expects nothing of poor flesh and blood, for he shall never be disappointed. Spurgeon

When the wheel turns, those who are lowest rise, and the highest sink. Patience, then, believer, eternity will right the wrongs of time. Spurgeon

"Boast not of Christ's work for you, unless you can show us the Spirit's work in you." ~ J.C. Ryle

I am not so much troubled about how evil came into the world as about helping get it out. Spurgeon

"How many Christians really harbor within their own spirit the daily expectation of God's presence?" AW Tozer

I have come to reckon that nothing is worth seeking after but that which will survive the tomb. Spurgeon

Ray Comfort's blog on Heaven's location!

Friday, September 23, 2011

Heaven's Location

The location of heaven doesn’t concern me. Just because I couldn’t tell you the exact location of the country of Mauritania doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. All we can say for certain is that it is “up” (see Deut. 30:12; Amos 9:2; John 3:13).

Most people don’t realize the Bible teaches that heaven is coming down to earth. We are waiting for a new heavens and a new earth in which God will make all things new (see Isa. 65:17; 2 Pet. 3:13). Completely. When God sets up His kingdom on this earth, He is going to remove the Genesis curse; that means there will be no more floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, droughts, earthquakes, disease, weeds, pain, suffering, or death. It is then that “the wolf and the lamb shall feed together” (Isa. 65:25), and creation will stop devouring itself (see Rom. 8:18–25). Those who trust in Jesus Christ will be given brand new bodies that will be like the resurrected body of Jesus—bodies that can eat, touch, feel, etc., but will never age or feel pain or sorrow. All this all sounds too good to be true, but it can be a proven reality for those who obey the gospel.

Think of it—eternal life, on this wonderful earth restored to when it was like the Garden of Eden. A place where there are no rapists, no murderers, no pedophiles, no hypocrites, liars, blasphemers, or thieves. A place of perfect fruit, incredible animals, unimaginable color, massive waterfalls, amazing plants, more beautiful birds, bigger fish, grander canyons. We are also told that God will remove the sea (Rev. 21:1), which will give us a little more room.

But best of all, the Creator of the universe, Almighty God, will be there. Scripture tells us a number of times that “God is light.” So there will no longer be a need for the sun, because He Himself will radiate in all of His unspeakable glory (see Rev. 21:23). Two thousand years ago He was manifest in human form to save us from death. However, Jesus of Nazareth is no longer the Man who was limited to time and space. He has ascended into heaven and is “glorified”—in the state He was in before He came to this earth. He dwells in “unapproachable light” and shines “brighter than the sun” (1 Tim. 6:16; Acts 26:13).

Mere words could never express my infinite gratitude to Him for giving me life, and then for saving me from being justly damned in hell for my sins. But I will have eternity to love and worship Him at whose right hand are “pleasures forevermore” (Psa. 16:11). No enjoyment on this sad, old earth has come even close to the unending pleasures that God has prepared “for those who love Him” (1 Cor. 2:9). What a tragedy for people to miss out, simply because they refuse to repent and trust the Savior.

I found reading these truths such a blessing that I wanted to share it with you.

180 movie trailer

Here's another challenging clip. I'd be interested to know your thoughts on this topic!
I'm looking forward to watching the movie soon! (It is released on 26th!)

A couple of challenges from Philippians

"Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world." Philippians 2:14+15

So as well as thinking of ways to encourage each other, lets try stopping ourselves complaining!
(Well, that's a challenge to me even if it isn't to anyone else!)

"But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His suffering, being conformed to His death, if by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule,[a] let us be of the same mind." Philippians 3:7-16

Is knowing Christ our consuming desire? Do we long to know Him better? Can any of us say with Paul that we count "all things as rubbish" that we may gain Christ?

Just thought I'd share these challenges. :) In fact, the whole book is full of challenges. (I'll leave you to decide whether you think I mean the book of Philippians or the Book of the Bible. Or maybe I mean both?)

Methought it was time for a few more quotes:)

Faith obliterates time, annihilates distance, and brings future things at once into its possession. Spurgeon

If you love Christ, never be ashamed to let others see it and know it. Speak for Him. Witness for Him. Live for Him. Work for Him. If He has loved you and washed you from your sins in His own blood, you never need shrink from letting others know that you feel it, and love Him in return. ~ J.C. Ryle

He would have us like children who believe what their father tells them. Spurgeon

"When we allow God to be exalted in our difficulties we are in the perfect place to smell the fragrance of His Presence." AW Tozer

The saints are sinners still. Our best tears need to be wept over, the strongest faith is mixed with unbelief. Spurgeon

"Christians often try to put God in a box. The God who fits in a box isn't the God & Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." AW Tozer

Stagger not at electing love; it is one of the highest notes of heavenly music. Spurgeon

Jesus Christ’s honour is at stake in our bodily lives. Are we remaining faithful to the Son of God in everything that attacks His life in us? Oswald Chambers

God’s choice of us was not because we were holy, but to make us holy; and God’s purpose will not be fulfilled unless we are made holy. Spurgeon

Jesus Christ reveals, not an embarrassed God, not a confused God, not a God who stands apart from the problems, but One who stands in the thick of the whole thing with man. Oswald Chambers

That which is wrought by noise will subside when quiet reigns, as the bubble dies with the wave which bore it. Spurgeon

"Remember that you cannot understand the mind of the Lord, nor the meaning of His dealings." ~ J.C. Ryle

All human work which does not begin and end in the Lord Jesus must be a non-success. Spurgeon

An excerpt from Spurgeon's Evening by Evening for 17th September

“Encourage him.” - Deuteronomy_1:38

"Brethren, take the text as God’s message to you. Labour to help others, and especially strive to encourage them. Talk cheerily to the young and anxious enquirer, lovingly try to remove stumblingblocks out of his way. When you find a spark of grace in the heart, kneel down and blow it into a flame. Leave the young believer to discover the roughness of the road by degrees, but tell him of the strength which dwells in God, of the sureness of the promise, and of the charms of communion with Christ. Aim to comfort the sorrowful, and to animate the desponding. Speak a word in season to him that is weary, and encourage those who are fearful to go on their way with gladness. God encourages you by his promises; Christ encourages you as he points to the heaven he has won for you, and the spirit encourages you as he works in you to will and to do of his own will and pleasure. Imitate divine wisdom, and encourage others."

I think it would be great if everyone thought of a couple of ways to encourage each other over the next week (and longer) and put them into practice!!

Creation talks.

Well, Dad and I had a really fantastic time in Winsford, Cheshire listening to John Mackay. There were 3 sessions, and we arrived a few minutes into the 1st session due to a traffic jam. It sometimes feels a bit like information overload as he always gives so many fascinating facts. We learnt a lot!! 1 of my favourite parts was when he told us not to blame God for broccoli and brussels sprouts because they come from the cabbage and its man made breeding etc that gave us all these varieties. (But left to their own devices, they would revert to wild cabbage!!!!) We also had a great time singing along to Helen Shapiro's latest album "What Wondrous Love is this?"

Well, we had an absolutely fantastic time with Helen Shapiro at St. Thomas' Church, Lancaster, this evening. It was great! She has a really powerful voice and a really powerful presentation of the Gospel incorporated with her testimony! Everyone I spoke to had REALLY enjoyed it and been so blessed. :)

Today's quota of quotes.

I want you to beware of letting good thoughts and godly convictions slip away, if you have them. Cherish them and nourish them, lest you lose them for ever. Make the most of them, lest they take to themselves wings and flee away. Have you an inclination to begin praying? Put it in practice at once. Have you an idea of beginning really to serve Christ? Set about it at once. Are you enjoying any spiritual light? See that you live up to your light. Trifle not with opportunities, lest the day come when you will want to use them, and not be able. Linger not, lest you become wise too late. ~ J.C. Ryle

It very often happens that the converts that are born in excitement die when the excitement is over. Spurgeon

Any battle for victory, power, and deliverance - from ourselves and from sin - which is not based constantly upon the gazing and the beholding of the Lord Jesus, with the heart and life lifted up to Him, is doomed to failure.
Alan Redpath

If you profess to be a Christian, yet find full satisfaction in worldly pleasures and pursuits, your profession is false. Spurgeon

Every now and again, Our Lord lets us see what we would be like if it were not for Himself; it is a justification of what He said - "Without Me you can do nothing." That is why the bedrock of Christianity is personal, passionate devotion to the Lord Jesus.
Oswald Chambers

When man fell in the garden, manhood fell entirely; there was not one single pillar in the temple of manhood that stood erect. Spurgeon

[Jesus] is strong...but He's also approachable. He is able to carry our load...but He'll never make us feel embarrassed or defeated for asking.
Joni Eareckson Tada

If we do as God commands, and do not seem to succeed, it is no fault of ours. Failure itself is success as long as we did not fail to obey. Spurgeon

Here is the great secret of success. Work with all your might; but trust not in the least in your work. Pray with all your might for the blessing of God; but work, at the same time, with all diligence, with all patience, with all perseverance. Pray then, and work. Work and pray. And still again pray, and then work. And so on all the days of your life. The result will surely be, abundant blessing. Whether you see much fruit or little fruit, such kind of service will be blessed... George Muller

Faith is the channel of salvation, not the fountain and source of it. Spurgeon

Jesus Christ wants disciples and not admirers. An admirer is the cheap edition of a disciple.
Anonymous

If you truly believe in Jesus, it is for life. Saving faith is a life-long act. Spurgeon

A few more quotes to read and enjoy / be challenged by

O blessed Jesus, it is the same still, thou wilt not dazzle or amuse, and therefore men prefer any charlatan to thee. Spurgeon

Are you a true believer? If you are, you ought to glory in Christ. Glory not in your own faith, your own feelings, your own knowledge, your own prayers, your own amendment, your own diligence. Glory in nothing but Christ. Alas! The best of us know but little of that merciful and mighty Saviour. We do not exalt Him and glory in Him enough. Let us pray that we may see more of the fullness there is in Him. ~ J.C. Ryle

Nobody can do as much damage to the church of God as the man who is within its walls, but not within its life. Spurgeon

“…your life is safe in the care of the Lord your God, secure in his treasure pouch!” 1 Samuel 25:29 NLT

Half our fears arise from neglect of the Bible and are the result of ignorance. Spurgeon

I find all these quotes very interesting. I hope you do too!
+ Always remember that God cares for you so your life is safe in Him (although technically its His life- HE made us and redeemed us!)

A couple of lovely hymns

O my Redeemer,
What a Friend Thou art to me!
Oh, what a refuge I have found in Thee!
When the way was dreary,
And my heart was sore oppressed,
’Twas Thy voice that lulled me
To a calm sweet rest.

Refrain

Nearer, draw nearer,
Till my soul is lost in Thee;
Nearer, draw nearer,
Blessèd Lord, to me.

When in their beauty
Stars unveil their silver light,
Then, O my Saviour,
Give me songs at night—
Songs of yonder mansions,
Where the dear ones, gone before,
Sing Thy praise for ever,
On that peaceful shore.

Refrain

Jesus, my Saviour,
When the last deep shadows fall;
When in the silence
I shall hear Thy call—
In Thine arms reposing,
Let me breathe my life away,
And awake triumphant,
In eternal day.

Refrain
http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/w/f/wfyor2me.htm

O safe to the Rock that is higher than I,
My soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly;
So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine, would I be;
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

Refrain

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,”
I’m hiding in Thee.

In the calm of the noontide, in sorrow’s lone hour,
In times when temptation casts o’er me its power;
In the tempests of life, on its wide, heaving sea,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

Refrain

How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,
I have fled to my refuge and breathed out my woe;
How often, when trials like sea billows roll,
Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul.

Refrain

Time for a few more quotes to consider!!

If we know any thing of true saving religion, let us ever beware of the beginnings of backsliding. It is like the letting out of water, first a drop and then a torrent. Once out of the way of holiness, there is no saying to what we may come. Once giving way to petty inconsistencies, we may find ourselves one day committing every sort of wickedness. Let us keep far from the brink of evil. Let us not play with fire. Let us never fear being too particular, too strict, and too precise. No petition in the Lord’s prayer is more important than the last but one, “Lead us not into temptation.” ~ J.C. Ryle
No law can give me the right to do what is wrong. - Abraham Lincoln
"Having made Jesus your all, you shall find all in Jesus." - C.H. Spurgeon
Let all who desire to please Christ, watch and pray against self-esteem. It is a feeling which is deeply rooted in our hearts. Thousands have come out from the world, taken up the cross, professed to forsake their own righteousness, and believe in Christ, who have felt irritated and annoyed when a person has been more honored than themselves. These things ought not so to be. We ought often to ponder the words of Paul, “Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind, let each esteem others better than themselves.” (Phil 2:3) Blessed is that person who can sincerely and gladly rejoice when others are exalted, though they themselves are overlooked and passed by! ~ J.C. Ryle
"Only after all the noise has spent itself do we begin to hear in the silence of our hearts, the voice of God." AW Tozer
Thus there will be three effects of nearness to Jesus—humility, happiness, and holiness. Spurgeon "Most Christians are satisfied living as common Christians, without an insatiable hunger for the deeper things of God." AW Tozer
The converse of saints on earth should be a rehearsal of their everlasting communion in heaven. Spurgeon
Nothing that man makes for man will endure. Build on, ye despots; but Time, a mightier king than you, will pull down all that you put up. Spurgeon
Ye shall not have his smiles if the smiles of the world will do as well. Spurgeon

A few more quotes from the late great Major Ian Thomas

There are few things quite so boring as being religious, but there is nothing quite so exciting as being a Christian! Major I. Thomas

Christ in you, on the grounds of redemption this is the Gospel! To preach anything less than this must inevitably produce "Evan-jellyfish" folk with no spiritual vertebrae, whose faith does not "behave!" Major I. Thomas

The flesh everything that you do apart from Him "profiteth nothing" (John 6:63), and there is always the awful possibility, if you do not discover this principle, that you may spend a lifetime in the service of Jesus Christ doing nothing! Major I. Thomas

Jesus Christ Himself is the final exegesis of all truth. He is all that we need to know about God, and He is all that we need to know about man. Major I Thomas
Power to Say, “No,” to Ungodliness and, “Yes,” to Righteousness
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age . . . .Titus 2:11-12

Grace is not the freedom to sin, but the freedom not to sin. Grace is God’s heart extending itself towards us as he initiates in us the ability to overcome our weaknesses, failures, and inadequacies. The foremost characteristic of living by grace is trust in the redeeming work of Jesus Christ: the Cross forgives our past sin through Christ’s death, puts away our present sin through Christ’s burial and triumphs over future sin through Christ’s resurrection. Grace is not an abstraction, but Jesus living his life in us by the power of the Holy Spirit.

To be in Christ—that is redemption; but for Christ to be in you—that is sanctification! To be in Christ—that makes you fit for heaven; but for Christ to be in you—that makes you fit for earth! To be in Christ—that changes your destination; but for Christ to be in you—that changes your destiny! The one makes heaven your home—the other makes this world His workshop. Major I. Thomas

Apparently, Major Thomas also used to tell people "God Bless You... even though you don't deserve it!!" You've got to love his honesty! :)

Be challenged, encouraged and blessed.

The good man has his enemies. He would not be like his Lord if he had not – Spurgeon

We have a God who delights in impossibilities. Andrew Murray

Doubt? I had sooner suffer any affliction than be left to question the gospel or my own interest in it – Spurgeon

There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful than that of a continual conversation with God.

If we were without enemies we might fear that we were not the friends of God, for the friendship of the world is enmity to God- Spurgeon

To worship God in truth is to recognize Him for being who He is, and to recognize ourselves for what we are.

The best way to make a man sober is to bring him to the foot of the cross – Spurgeon

What a humbling thought it is, that so often there is earnest prayer in which the desire for our own joy or pleasure is far stronger than many desire for God's glory. No wonder there are so many unanswered prayers! Here we have the secret. God cannot be glorified when that glory is not the object of our prayers.
Andrew Murray

Patience! patience! you are always in a hurry, but God is not – Spurgeon

Faith expects from God what is beyond all expectation. Andrew Murray
Ambition, self-esteem, and self-conceit lie deep at the bottom of all men’s hearts, and often in the hearts where they are least suspected. Thousands imagine that they are humble, who cannot bear to see an equal more honoured and favoured than themselves. Few indeed can be found who rejoice heartily in a neighbour’s promotion over their own heads. The quantity of envy and jealousy in the world is a glaring proof of the prevalence of pride. Men would not envy a brother’s advancement if they had not a secret thought that their own merit was greater than his.
Let us live on our guard against this sore disease, if we make any profession of serving Christ. The harm that it has done to the Church of Christ is far beyond calculation. Let us learn to take pleasure in the prosperity of others, and to be content with the lowest place for ourselves. The rule given to the Philippians should be often before our eyes: “In lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves.” The example of John the Baptist is a bright instance of the spirit at which we should aim. He said of our Lord, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (Philippians 2:3; John 3:30)
What right have you to set up your feelings against the Word of Christ – Spurgeon

Each time, before you intercede, be quiet first, and worship God in His glory. Think of what He can do, and how He delights to hear the prayers of His redeemed people. Think of your place and privilege in Christ, and expect great things!
Andrew Murray

There is nothing so deluding as feelings. Christians cannot live by feelings. – Spurgeon

Abide in Me: These words are the command of love, which is ever only a promise in a different shape. Think of this until all feeling of burden and fear and despair pass away, and the first thought that comes as you hear of abiding in Jesus be one of bright and joyous hope.
Andrew Murray

We must all learn to hear what we do not like. The question is not, “Is it pleasant?” but, “Is it true? - Spurgeon

The holy and most glorious God invites us to come to Him, to converse with Him, to ask from Him such things as we need, and to experience what a blessing there is in fellowship with Him. He has created us in His own image and has redeemed us by His own Son, so that in prayer with Him we might find our highest glory and salvation.
Andrew Murray

He who communes with God is always at home. Spurgeon
