Food for Thought

More quotes:

“The nature and attributes of Jesus Christ are altogether lovely.” (Pastor Jack Hibbs)

“To become effective men of God, then, we must know and acknowledge that every grace and every virtue proceeds from God alone and that not even a good thought can come from us except it be from Him.” A.W. Tozer

“Apart from the Scriptures we have no sure philosophy, apart from Jesus Christ, we have no knowledge of God; apart from the in-living Spirit we have no ability to live lives morally pleasing to God.” A.W. Tozer

“God exists for Himself and man for the glory of God.” A.W. Tozer

“Everything we do should centre around the Person of our holy, holy Lord and extol continually the greatness of His dignity and power. There is a glorified Man on the right hand of the Majesty in heaven faithfully representing us there. We are left for a season among men; let us faithfully represent Him here.” A.W. Tozer

“Fear not because your prayer is stammering, your words feeble, and your language poor; Jesus can understand you.” J.C. Ryle

“Christ is never fully valued, until sin is clearly seen. We must know the depth and malignity of our disease, in order to appreciate the great Physician.” J.C. Ryle

I reckon these ought to give us all lots to ponder on and apply. Don't you?
I found them rather challenging, humbling and encouraging.

Lovely afternoon in Coniston

We didn't come across any trilobites, (which is what I was looking for) but we had a lovely afternoon out. :)
(Yes, I took the last picture this afternoon, and added that verse because that's what it reminded me of.)

Words of Wisdom from J C Ryle. "Live as in the sight of God"

Live as in the sight of God. This is what Abraham did,—he walked before Him.
This is what Enoch did,—he walked with Him.
This is what heaven itself will be,—the eternal presence of God.
Do nothing you would not like God to see.
Say nothing you would not like God to hear.
Write nothing you would not like God to read.
Go to no place where you would not like God to find you.
Read no book of which you would not like God to say, "Show it Me."
Never spend your time in such a way that you would not like to have God say, "What art thou doing?"
(found in J C Ryle's "Thoughts for Young Men")

(the whole article/booklet is online here: http://www.wholesomewords.org/etexts/ryle/ryleyouth.pdf )

A friend sent me this so I thought I'd pass it on.
I hope you're challenged, blessed and encouraged by it, as I was.

Another Wesley hymn

Lord, I believe a rest remains to all Thy people known;
A rest where pure enjoyment reigns and Thou art loved alone.

A rest where all our soul's desire is fixed on things above;
Where doubt and pain and love and fear expire, cast our by perfect love.

From every evil motion freed, (The Son hath made us free),
On all the powers of hell we tread, in glorious liberty.

Safe in the way of live, above death, earth and hell we rise;
We find when perfected in love our long-sought paradise.

O that I now the rest might know, believe and enter in!
Now, Saviour, now the power bestow, and let me cease from sin!

Remove this hardness from my heart, this unbelief remove;
To me the rest of faith impart the Sabbath of thy love.

Come, O my Saviour, come away! Into my soul descend,
No longer from Thy creature stay My Author and my End.

The bliss Thou hast for me prepared no longer be delayed
Come, my exceeding great reward, for Whom I first was made.

Come, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, and seal me Thine abode!
Let all I am in Thee be lost; let all be lost in God.

John and Charles Wesley (as set out in John Wesley's a Plain Account of Christian perfection.)

A Charles Wesley hymn "O for a heart to praise my God"

O for a heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free,
A heart that always feels Thy blood
So freely shed for me.

A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer’s throne,
Where only Christ is heard to speak,
Where Jesus reigns alone.

A humble, lowly, contrite, heart,
Believing, true and clean,
Which neither life nor death can part
From Christ who dwells within.

A heart in every thought renewed
And full of love divine,
Perfect and right and pure and good,
A copy, Lord, of Thine.

Thy tender heart is still the same,
And melts at human woe:
Jesus, for thee distressed I am,
I want Thy love to know.

My heart, Thou know’st, can never rest
Till Thou create my peace;
Till of mine Eden repossest,
From self, and sin, I cease.

Fruit of Thy gracious lips, on me
Bestow that peace unknown,
The hidden manna, and the tree
Of life, and the white stone.

Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart;
Come quickly from above;
Write Thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new, best name of Love.

I didn't know there were so many verses to this hymn. I looked it up on Sunday and only found 5. I'm glad I've found the extra 3; there's so much in Wesley's hymns.

August 7th Excerpt

Public domain content taken from Streams in the Desert by Mrs. Charles Cowman

“O the Spirit filled life; is it thine, is it thine?
Is thy soul wholly filled with the Spirit Divine?
O thou child of the King, has He fallen on thee?
Does He reign in thy soul, so that all men may see
The dear Saviour’s blest image reflected in thee?

“Has He swept through thy soul like the waves of the sea?
Does the Spirit of God daily rest upon thee?
Does He sweeten thy life, does He keep thee from care?
Does He guide thee and bless thee in answer to prayer?
Is it joy to be led of the Lord anywhere?

“Is He near thee each hour, does He stand at thy side?
Does He gird thee with strength, has He come to abide?
Does He give thee to know that all things may be done
Through the grace and the power of the Crucified One?
Does He witness to thee of the glorified Son?

“Has He purged thee of dross with the fire from above?
Is He first in thy thoughts, has He all of thy love?
Is His service thy choice, and is sacrifice sweet?
Is the doing His will both thy drink and thy meat?
Dost thou run at His bidding with glad eager feet?

“Has He freed thee from self and from all of thy greed?
Dost thou hasten to succour thy brother in need?
As a soldier of Christ dost thou hardness endure?
Is thy hope in the Lord everlasting and sure?
Hast thou patience and meekness, art tender and pure?

“O the Spirit filled life may be thine, may be thine,
In thy soul evermore the Shekinah may shine;
It is thine to live with the tempests all stilled,
It is thine with the blessed Holy Ghost to be filled;
It is thine, even thine, for thy Lord has so willed.”

Who and What God is according to Jesus

The other week, my dad asked me to "do a little research" for him: i.e. go through the gospels and write down (from the words of Jesus) what God is like. It was an interesting challenge. Here is the result.

Who and What God is according to Jesus
In the book of Matthew: Righteous, Our Sustainer and Provider, the Only One worthy of worship and service, patient and gracious (allowing time for repentance), to be obeyed, merciful, pure, generous, light, glorious, truthful, faithful, Holy, just, loving, good, perfect!, forgiving, our leader, our deliverer, powerful and glorious, our treasure, all-knowing, our Heavenly Father, hater of lawlessness, willing to cleanse and heal, our guide and shepherd – we are to follow Him-, our Healer, the Lord, the One to be feared, the hider, the revealer, the One who gives us rest, gentle, our judge- to Whom we must give account, greater than anyone or anything else, the Sower, the Farmer, compassionate, the builder of His church, the King, miraculous provider, in the midst of His people, angry at wickedness, the Creator, Designer of Marriage, blesser of children, One who makes the impossible possible, generous, the One who paid our ransom, the perfecter of praise, the One who hears and answers prayer, the God of the living, our teacher, the One who sits on the throne, the only One who knows the day and hour.
In the book of Mark: The One who casts out demons, the One who calls sinners to repentance, the One who delights in doing good, the One who gives more to those who have but takes away from those who don’t have understanding, the One who is obeyed by the wind and waves, the One who had great compassion for those possessed by demons, the One who raises the dead, the One who judges righteously, the One who multiplies, the One who gave the commandments, the One who gave us His Word, the One who looks past the outer appearances and sees the inner (secret) things, the One who rewards faith in Him, the One who opens ears and loosens tongues, the One who is coming in glory, the One who gave us an example of how to live, the one who sent Jesus to save us, the One who loves purity, the One who encourages servanthood and humility, the One who hates false appearances, the One who withholds forgiveness from those who withhold forgiveness, the Owner of the vineyard who will destroy the wicked, the One who spoke to Moses from the burning bush, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the One whom we should hear, the One we should love with all our heart, mind, soul and strength, the One who gives us warnings, the One who is with us speaking in and through us, the One who tells us of things to come, the One who has holy angels, the One who has an elect, the One whose word will never pass away.
In the book of Luke: The One whose word gives us life, the One who anoints to preach the gospel to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, the One who sent Elijah to the widow of Zarephath, the One whose power healed Naaman, the One who sent Jesus to preach the kingdom of God, the One who knows every thought/reasoning in our hearts, The One who blesses the poor – He gives them the Kingdom of God, The One who blesses the hungry -He fills them, The One who blesses those who weep- He gives them laughter, He rewards those who are persecuted for His Name’s sake, He pronounces woe to the rich, the full, those who laugh now and those of whom all men speak well, He turns worldly wisdom upside down, He is merciful, He hates hypocrisy, He blesses those who aren’t offended because of Him, the One who is pleased when His children spend time with Him, the One who gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask, the One who gives His disciples authority over every power of the enemy, the One who blesses those who hear and obey His Word, the One who is greater than Solomon and Jonah, the One who feeds the birds and clothes the lilies, He is no respecter of persons, He humbles the exalted and exalts the humble, He has joy over repentant sinners, the One who avenges His elect, the One who gives a mouth and wisdom, the One whose name is hated, the One who bestowed a kingdom upon Jesus, the One who promised the Holy Spirit, the One in whose name repentance and remission of sins is to be preached.
In the book of John:
He loved the world. He sent His Son to save the world, the One who gives living water, God is spirit and must be worshipped in spirit and truth, God loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself does, the One who raises the dead and gives them life, the One who committed all judgment to the Son, the One who should be honoured, the One who has life in Himself, the One who testified of Jesus, the One who has set His seal on Jesus, the One who gives the true bread from Heaven, the One who enables us to believe in Jesus, the One who gives people to Jesus, the One who wills that everyone who sees and believes in Jesus should have everlasting Life, the One who draws people to Jesus, the One who bears witness of Jesus, the one who is pleased by Jesus, the One who is always with Jesus, the One who honours Jesus, the One who is eternal, the One who knows and loves Jesus, the One who holds us securely in His hand, the one who sanctifies, the One who glorifies Himself in our circumstances, the one who honours those who serve Jesus, the One who told Jesus what to say, the one whose command is everlasting life, the One who dwells in Jesus, the One who loves those who love Jesus, the vinedresser who takes away unfruitful branches and prunes fruitful branches, the one who is glorified when we bear much fruit, the One who gives what we ask when we ask in Jesus’ name, the One who gave Jesus authority over all flesh, the One who keeps those He gave to Jesus, the One who gave Jesus a cup to drink, the One who gave Pilate power.

"The Riches of His grace" by C. A. Coates

I came across this poem and rather like it.

Henceforth my lips and pen
Shall seek to spread His fame;
My hands and feet shall swiftly move
To glorify His Name.

I seek no earthly place;
My joy is all in Him;
My thirsty soul shall drink no more
From fountains stained with sin.

But in the Lord Himself,
The Lord who died for me,
Despised on earth, enthroned in heaven,
My springs of life shall be.

And when He takes me home
To gaze upon His face,
More loud, more sweet my soul shall sing
The riches of His grace.
~Poem by C.A. Coates~
(1862-1945)

The beloved Bible teacher, C.A. Coates, composed this beautiful
poem when he was 16 years old on his conversion.

Today's excerpt from Spurgeon's devotional Faith's Checkbook

Faith's Check Book, Daily Entry

C. H. Spurgeon

July 17

Valiant for Truth

The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. (Daniel 11:32)

"The Lord is a man of war, Jehovah is his name." Those who enlist under His banner shall have a Commander who will train them for the conflict and give them both vigor and valor. The times of which Daniel wrote were of the very worst kind, and then it was promised that the people of God would come out in their best colors: they would be strong and stout to confront the powerful adversary.

Oh, that we may know our God: His power, His faithfulness, His immutable love, and so may be ready to risk everything in His behalf. He is One whose character excites our enthusiasm and makes us willing to live and to die for Him. Oh, that we may know our God by familiar fellowship with Him; for then we shall become like Him and shall be prepared to stand up for truth and righteousness. He who comes forth fresh from beholding the face of God will never fear the face of man. If we dwell with Him, we shall catch the heroic spirit, and to us a world of enemies will be but as the drop of a bucket. A countless array of men, or even of devils, will seem as little to us as the nations are to God, and He counts them only as grasshoppers. Oh, to be valiant for truth in this day of falsehood.

Today's excerpt from Faith's Checkbook

July 15

The Mourner Comforted

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)

By the valley of weeping we come to Zion. One would have thought mourning and being blessed were in opposition, but the infinitely wise Savior puts them together in this Beatitude. What He has joined together let no man put asunder. Mourning for sin—our own sins, and the sins of others—is the Lord's seal set upon His faithful ones. When the Spirit of grace is poured upon the house of David, or any other house, they shall mourn. By holy mourning we receive the best of our blessings, even as the rarest commodities come to us by water. Not only shall the mourner be blessed at some future day, but Christ pronounces him blessed even now.
The Holy Spirit will surely comfort those hearts which mourn for sin. They shall be comforted by the application of the blood of Jesus and by the cleansing power of the Holy Ghost. They shall be comforted as to the abounding sin of their city and of their age by the assurance that God will glorify Himself, however much men may rebel against Him. They shall be comforted with the expectation that they shall be wholly freed from sin before long and shall soon be taken up to dwell forever in the glorious presence of their Lord.

Spurgeon's Devotional Faith's Checkbook yesterday's entry

July 8

An Angel Encampment

The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. (Psalm 34:7)

We cannot see the angels, but it is enough that they can see us. There is one great Angel of the Covenant, whom not having seen we love, and His eye is always upon us both day and night. He has a host of holy ones under Him, and He causes these to be watchers over His saints and to guard them from all ill. If devils do us mischief, shining ones do us service.
Note that the Lord of angels does not come and go and pay us transient visits, but He and His armies encamp around us. The headquarters of the army of salvation is where those live whose trust is in the living God. This camp surrounds the faithful so that they cannot be attacked from any quarter unless the adversary can break through the entrenchments of the Lord of angels. We have a fixed protection, a permanent watch. Sentineled by the messengers of God, we shall not be surprised by sudden assaults nor swallowed up by overwhelming forces. Deliverance is promised in this verse—deliverance by the great Captain of our salvation, and that deliverance we shall obtain again and again until our warfare is accomplished and we exchange the field of conflict for the home of rest.

Spurgeon's Checkbook of Faith, Today's entry. Psalm 140:13

June 27

Thank Him; Dwell Acceptably

Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence. (Psalm 140:13)

Oh, that my heart may be upright, that I may always be able to bless the name of the Lord! He is so good to those that be good, that I would fain be among them and feel myself full of thankfulness every day. Perhaps, for a moment, the righteous are staggered when their integrity results in severe trial; but assuredly the day shall come when they shall bless their God that they did not yield to evil suggestions and adopt a shifty policy. In the long run true men will thank the God of the right for leading them by a right way. Oh, that I may be among them!
What a promise is implied in this second clause, "The upright shall dwell in thy presence!" They shall stand accepted where others appear only to be condemned. They shall be the courtiers of the great King, indulged with audience whensoever they desire it. They shall be favoured ones upon whom Jehovah smiles and with whom He graciously communes. Lord, I covet this high honour, this precious privilege. It will be heaven on earth to me to enjoy it. Make me in all things upright, that I may today and tomorrow and every day stand in Thy heavenly presence. Then will I give thanks unto Thy name evermore. Amen.

I love this verse; I find it greatly encouraging.
Hope you do too.

He with us; we with Him. Spurgeon's Faith's Checkbook.

Faith's Check Book, Daily Entry

C. H. Spurgeon

June 22

He with Us; We with Him

The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. (Proverbs 10:27)

There is no doubt about it. The fear of the Lord leads to virtuous habits, and these prevent that waste of life which comes of sin and vice. The holy rest which springs out of faith in the Lord Jesus also greatly helps a man when he is ill. Every physician rejoices to have a patient whose mind is fully at ease. Worry kills, but confidence in God is like healing medicine.
We have therefore all the arrangements for long life, and if it be really for our good, we shall see a good old age and come to our graves as shocks of corn in their season. Let us not be overcome with sudden expectation of death the moment we have a finger-ache, but let us rather expect that we may have to work on through a considerable length of days.
And what if we should soon be called to the higher sphere? Certainly there would be nothing to deplore in such a summons but everything to rejoice in. Living or dying we are the Lord's. If we live, Jesus will be with us; if we die, we shall be with Jesus.

The truest lengthening of life is to live while we live, wasting no time but using every hour for the highest ends. So be it this day.

(http://www.spurgeon.org/fcb/fcb.cgi)

I thought this was a good reminder. I love the phrase: "If we live, Jesus will be with us; if we die, we shall be with Jesus." What a glorious certainty for believers. I hope you're as blessed by that thought as I am.

I came across this poem/hymn and really like it.

ABANDONED

Utterly abandoned to the Holy Ghost!
Seeking all His fullness at whatever cost;
Cutting all the shore-lines, launching in the deep
Of His mighty power–strong to save and keep.

Utterly abandoned to the Holy Ghost!
Oh! the sinking, sinking, until self is lost!
Until the emptied vessel lies broken at His feet;
Waiting till His filling shall make the work complete.

Utterly abandoned to the will of God;
Seeking for no other path than my Master trod;
Leaving ease and pleasure, making Him my choice,
Waiting for His guidance, listening for His voice.

Utterly abandoned! no will of my own;
For time and for eternity, His, and His alone;
All my plans and purposes lost in His sweet will,
Having nothing, yet in Him all things possessing still.

Utterly abandoned! ’tis so sweet to be
Captive in His bonds of love, yet so wondrous free;
Free from sin’s entanglements, free from doubt and fear,
Free from every worry, burden, grief or care.

Utterly abandoned! oh, the rest is sweet,
As I tarry, waiting, at His blessed feet;
Waiting for the coming of the Guest divine,
Who my inmost being shall perfectly refine.

Lo! He comes and fills me, Holy Spirit sweet!
I, in Him, am satisfied! I, in Him, complete!
And the light within my soul shall nevermore grow dim
While I keep my covenant–abandoned unto Him!

Yes, its that time again (or it will be tomorrow!) HAPPY PURIM!!

Time for yummy Hamantashen!!! and Purim spiels etc. :) :) :)

But the Jews who were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day, as well as on the fourteenth; and on the fifteenth of the month[b] they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness. Therefore the Jews of the villages who dwelt in the unwalled towns celebrated the fourteenth day of the month of Adar with gladness and feasting, as a holiday, and for sending presents to one another.

So they called these days Purim, after the name Pur ((that is, the lot)). Therefore, because of all the words of this letter, what they had seen concerning this matter, and what had happened to them, the Jews established and imposed it upon themselves and their descendants and all who would join them, that without fail they should celebrate these two days every year, according to the written instructions and according to the prescribed time, that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city, that these days of Purim should not fail to be observed among the Jews, and that the memory of them should not perish among their descendants.

 Then Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, wrote with full authority to confirm this second letter about Purim.  And Mordecai sent letters to all the Jews, to the one hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,  to confirm these days of Purim at their appointed time, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had prescribed for them, and as they had decreed for themselves and their descendants concerning matters of their fasting and lamenting. So the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim, and it was written in the book.

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?  For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Excerpt from "In Green Pastures" by J.R. Miller D.D.
"If you are Christ's, every energy of your mind, every affection of your heart, every power of your soul, every fibre of your body, every particle of your influence, every penny of your money, is Christ's, and all of these are to be used to bless your fellow-men and to make the world better..."

This gave me a chuckle.

Israeli Sense of Humour:

An ingenious example of speech and politics occurred recently in the United Nations Assembly and made the world community smile.

A representative from Israel began: "Before beginning my talk I want to tell you something about Moses. When he struck the rock and it brought forth water, he thought, 'What a good opportunity to have a bath!'

"He removed his clothes, put them aside on the rock and entered the water.

"When he got out and wanted to dress, his clothes had vanished. A Palestinian had stolen them."

The Palestinian representative jumped up furiously and shouted, "What are you talking about? The Palestinians weren't there then."

The Israeli representative smiled and said, "And now that we have made that clear, I will begin my speech."

While obviously fictitious, it's good for a laugh. :)

2 Peter 2:9a

"...then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations..."

I came across this today and I thought it was a great thought to hold on to; firstly that the Lord knows everything, and secondly that He will deliver the godly out of temptations.

I hope that realization blesses you as much as it blessed me!

Quote from Alan Redpath

"There is no circumstance, no trouble, no testing, that can ever touch me until, first of all, it has gone past God and past Christ, right through to me. If it has come that far, it has come with great purpose."
                                                                                                       Alan Redpath.

This struck me as a very interesting quote. I hope I remember it when difficulties come.

Continuing on the Christian perfection theme...

Reading through the book of Hebrews the words perfect and perfection are mentioned a lot of times. (no I didn't count!). I used the cheat's version. E-Sword is very useful!
The word "perfect" occurs 99 times in Scripture. I guess we should take note of it, but it's funny how it hasn't really "jumped out" at me before reading Mr Wesley's book!

"But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen."
1 Peter 5:10 NKJV

"Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection," Hebrews 6:1

A poem

"Not a sound invades the stillness,
Not a form invades the scene,
Save the voice of my Beloved
And the person of my King.

Precious, gentle, holy Jesus,
Blessed Bridegroom of my heart,
In Thy secret inner chamber
Thou wilt whisper what Thou art.

And within those heavenly places,
Calmly hushed in sweet repose,
There I drink with joy absorbing
All the love Thou wouldst disclose.

Wrapt in deep adoring silence,
Jesus, Lord, I dare not move,
Lest I lose the smallest saying
Meant to catch the ear of love.

Rest then, oh my soul, contented,
Thou hast reached that happy place
In the bosom of thy Saviour,
Gazing up in His dear face."

3 Wesley quotes

I've been reading Mr. Wesley's "Plain Account of Christian Perfection" (which I got for Christmas) Thanks Mum and Dad!
It's a very interesting and encouraging book which I'm thoroughly enjoying- sadly have nearly finished it.
3 quotes that particularly jumped out at me today:

"In the greatest temptations, a single look to Christ, and the barely pronouncing His name, suffices to overcome the wicked one, so it be done with confidence and calmness of spirit."

"God is so great, that He communicates greatness to the least thing that is done for His service."

"It is good to renew ourselves, from time to time, by closely examining the state of our souls, as if we had never done it before; for nothing tends more to the full assurance of faith, than to keep ourselves by this means in humility, and the exercise of all good works."

Hope you're encouraged as much as I was!
