This World: Playground or Battleground? Tozer strikes again. Good challenging stuff.

"The idea that this world is a playground instead of a battleground has now been accepted in practice by the vast majority of fundamentalist Christians. They might hedge around the question if they were asked bluntly to declare their position, but their conduct gives them away. They are facing both ways, enjoying Christ "and the world, gleefully telling everyone that accepting Jesus does not require them to give up their fun – Christianity is just the jolliest thing imaginable. The "worship" growing out of such a view of life is as far off centre as the view itself – a sort of sanctified nightclub without the champagne and the dressed-up drunks. " (found in chapter 1) http://www.calvarypo.org/HANDS/0692.pdf A Scared World Needs a Fearless Church by A.W. Tozer N O ONE CAN BLAME PEOPLE for being afraid. The world is in for a baptism of fire, and whether or not this present conflict is the beginning of the ordeal, such a baptism will surely come sooner...

Today's excerpt from In Green Pastures

"The Beauty within Bodily health is beautiful. Mental vigour is beautiful. But heart-purity is the glory of all loveliness. The heart makes the life. The inner fashions the outer. So, above all things, be pure-hearted. That you may be pure-hearted let Christ more and more into your life, that He may fill all your soul, and that His Spirit may permeate all your being. That the beauty of the Lord may be upon you, that the winning charm of God's loveliness may shine in your features, you must first have the beauty of Christ within you. The transfiguration must come from within. Only a holy, beautiful heart can make a holy, beautiful character." Quite a challenge isn't it?

Washington Gladden's poem Ultima Veritas, and a couple of lines from Kisses from Katie

Ultima Veritas by Washington Gladden     In the bitter waves of woe,     Beaten and tossed about     By the sullen winds that blow     From the desolate shores of doubt,--     When the anchors that faith had cast     Are dragging in the gale,     I am quietly holding fast     To the things that cannot fail:     I know that right is right;     That it is not good to lie;     That love is better than spite,     And a neighbour than a spy;     I know that passion needs     The leash of a sober mind;     I know that generous deeds     Some sure reward will find;     That the rulers must obey;     That the givers shall increase;   ...

Books and sermons and lots of grace.

Great quote from a book called "The End of a Coil" by Susan Warner I've read several of her books and they are all lovely, but this jumped out at me the other day: "...if anyone trusts His word and is willing to be His servant, Jesus loves him, and keeps him, and saves him, and makes him blessed for ever." (How good is that!) Also, a quote from a Joe Focht sermon that I heard recently: "You'll never really know peace until you know the grace of God." (That's why Paul always says Grace and peace, not the other way round.)

Here are a few thoughts to ponder.

"Nothing happens that has not been appointed with consummate care and foresight."  Daily devotional commentary. I think it's a really great reminder.  God knows every detail of our lives and only allows what He knows we can bear with His help. When you're struggling with difficult circumstances, remember God is Faithful.                                                                       YOUR REDEMPTION DRAWS NEAR!!! And here's a great song that I heard recently. I've found it very helpful.  Hope you do too.

Rowland Hill and Lady Erskine

Well, Happy New Year folks. It feels like it's been a strange start to 2015 to me. Does anyone else think the same or is it just me? Came across this very challenging article and think it's definitely worth sharing. ROWLAND HILL AND LADY ERSKINE C. H. Spurgeon Once when Rowland Hill was preaching, Lady Ann Erskine happened to be driving by: she was in the outer ring of the circle, and she asked the coach-man what all the people were there for. He replied 'They are going to hear Rowland Hill.' Well, she had heard a great deal about this strange man, accounted to be the very wildest of preachers and so she drew near. No sooner did Rowland Hill see her, than he said 'Come, I am going to have an auction, I am going to sell Lady Ann Erskine.' She of course stopped, and she wondered how she was going to be disposed of. 'Who will buy her?' Up comes the world. 'What will you give for her?' 'I will give her all the pomps and vanities of th...

Food for Thought

More quotes: “The nature and attributes of Jesus Christ are altogether lovely.” (Pastor Jack Hibbs) “To become effective men of God, then, we must know and acknowledge that every grace and every virtue proceeds from God alone and that not even a good thought can come from us except it be from Him.” A.W. Tozer “Apart from the Scriptures we have no sure philosophy, apart from Jesus Christ, we have no knowledge of God; apart from the in-living Spirit we have no ability to live lives morally pleasing to God.” A.W. Tozer “God exists for Himself and man for the glory of God.” A.W. Tozer “Everything we do should centre around the Person of our holy, holy Lord and extol continually the greatness of His dignity and power. There is a glorified Man on the right hand of the Majesty in heaven faithfully representing us there. We are left for a season among men; let us faithfully represent Him here.” A.W. Tozer “Fear not because your prayer is stammering, your words feeble, an...

Fountainview Academy: Wonderful, Merciful Saviour

I heard it quite a few years ago, but just came across this version again this evening.

Lovely afternoon in Coniston

We didn't come across any trilobites, (which is what I was looking for) but we had a lovely afternoon out. :) (Yes, I took the last picture this afternoon, and added that verse because that's what it reminded me of.)

Words of Wisdom from J C Ryle. "Live as in the sight of God"

Live as in the sight of God. This is what Abraham did,—he walked before Him. This is what Enoch did,—he walked with Him. This is what heaven itself will be,—the eternal presence of God. Do nothing you would not like God to see. Say nothing you would not like God to hear. Write nothing you would not like God to read. Go to no place where you would not like God to find you. Read no book of which you would not like God to say, "Show it Me." Never spend your time in such a way that you would not like to have God say, "What art thou doing?" (found in J C Ryle's "Thoughts for Young Men") (the whole article/booklet is online here:  http://www.wholesomewords.org/etexts/ryle/ryleyouth.pdf ) A friend sent me this so I thought I'd pass it on. I hope you're challenged, blessed and encouraged by it, as I was.

Another Wesley hymn

Lord, I believe a rest remains to all Thy people known; A rest where pure enjoyment reigns and Thou art loved alone. A rest where all our soul's desire is fixed on things above; Where doubt and pain and love and fear expire, cast our by perfect love. From every evil motion freed, (The Son hath made us free), On all the powers of hell we tread, in glorious liberty. Safe in the way of live, above death, earth and hell we rise; We find when perfected in love our long-sought paradise. O that I now the rest might know, believe and enter in! Now, Saviour, now the power bestow, and let me cease from sin! Remove this hardness from my heart, this unbelief remove; To me the rest of faith impart the Sabbath of thy love. Come, O my Saviour, come away! Into my soul descend, No longer from Thy creature stay My Author and my End. The bliss Thou hast for me prepared no longer be delayed Come, my exceeding great reward, for Whom I first was made. Come,...

Well, I thought this was rather funny.
